Cable vs DSL

Cable Modem vs DSL Lot of net users always wonder - which type of broadband connection is better - Cable or DSL ?

Which one of the two gives you more speed for the price?  Here we briefly analyze both of these popular broadband connection and try to find out which one is better :  Cable vs DSL .

Cable Modem vs DSL - Internet Access Comparison

DSL employs copper phone lines to provide fast, always-on Internet access. The technology is competing with cable data services. Cable modem service suffers from cable providers traditional focus on residential communities instead of business.

Cable modem speeds drop when a bunch of neighbors simultaneously download big files. The cable company can adjust for that by adding more equipment to the area.

With DSL, you don't worry about your neighbors. Instead you fret about distance from the nearest central phone office. Past a certain point --- about 10,000 feet --- there will be some loss of speed. Get past 18,000 feet and you probably can't get DSL at all.

Cable Modem vs DSL - Internet Security

There have been periodic stories about hackers breaking into desktop computers that are linked to the net.  DSL is a dedicated line, making intrusion very unlikely. Cable modem is slightly less protected because it involves shared data.

DSL service providers tend to emphasize the security issue, pointing out that cable modem service is a shared network in local neighborhoods. Without getting into the technical differences, cable modem service providers often counter by saying that DSL installation can be a complex process and both are shared networks.

DSL has the advantage of utilizing most of the existing copper wiring infrastructure, depending on qualification of cable plant--but it has a distance limitation, and the equipment costs have not come down enough to be competitive.

You should always take all of these factors into account while choosing either cable modem service or dsl service.
