DSL Speed Check
If you have a DSL connection you start thinking if you are really getting the DSL speed you are paying for. You get confused - "Is the net slow today or is some problem with my DSL ISP?"
Run a DSL speed check test to measure the bandwidth of your DSL connection. There are hundreds of speed tests available on the internet.
DSL speed test tools will measure the download speed of your DSL connection by sending a huge file to your PC. For accurate results, you have to close all the programs on your PC except this browser window. You will also have to delete all temporary internet files stored in your system.
Most of these DSL speed test tools do not give a dependable measurement of the speed of your local DSL link. The inaccuracy is due to the fact that a speed test from a random, remote server will give you the speed for that particular route at that particular time period under a specific server load. But all these parameters can vary extensively.
An accurate method to compute and measure DSL speed of your local DSL link is given below:
Ø Download a file of at least 1 MB from a local server during light internet traffic time period
Ø Measure the time it takes to download that file
Ø Then take into account all the overheads with optimum configuration of your PC
Ø Your binary FTP download speed in bps will be about one-tenth of the raw link speed in bps
If your operating system is Windows 98/NT/2000/XP, you can measure the speed of data transfer over a network adapter. A network adapter is generally used to connect a DSL modem. You can install ‘Network Monitor Agent’. On installation, you will be able to add Network Monitor Performance items to the display in System Monitor.
