Wireless DSL
Wireless DSL is just another term for fixed terrestrial (as against satellite) wireless. It can be said to be an umbrella term for a group of newer technologies.
Wireless DSL is not the same as DSL.
Fixed terrestrial wireless provides bandwidth and connection speed similar to that of DSL, which accounts for it's sometimes being referred to as Wireless DSL.
Technically, the term DSL (digital subscriber line) should only be used to describe data services over standard telephone lines, generally made of copper. Also, significant technical distinctions can be made between fixed terrestrial wireless and DSL. Therefore, the term ‘wireless DSL’ may not be absolutely accurate.
The two main fixed terrestrial wireless technologies are:
- BroadLink uses the same 11 Mbps IEEE 802.11b technology used in wireless local area networking, based on local transceivers with a relatively short range of about four miles. The service is sold only through Internet service providers (ISPs), not directly from BroadLink, and is fairly similar to cellular data.
- The other technology is based on a few high transceivers, located on mountaintops or other high locations, with relatively long range, and is known as Sprint Broadband Direct. Only those with a direct line of sight to a transceiver have access to the service. The service is sold direct, and is somewhat similar to wireless pay TV.
Wireless DSL service is available only to those with a direct line of sight to a transceiver, in both cases. However, the technology used by BroadLink tends to provide more complete coverage as there is less line of sight interference, and to be more scalable as there are fewer subscribers per transceiver.
In order to attain the maximum benefit from wireless DSL, it can easily be optimised by making the same adjustments, as it is quite comparable to Cable Internet and to DSL.
